Over the years, Jill has combined her practice as an installation artist, her experience as a class teacher in specialist schools, and her work alongside musicians, sensory theatre practitioners and other artists. Consequently, she has a deep respect for the power of the arts to open up new spaces of connection and shared, wordless experience. During her PhD study, Jill explored how a sensorial environment might enhance our capacity to be together in non-verbal ways. This work was further extended during her time as Researcher-in-Residence with Oily Cart, resulting in the publication ‘Being With’ in Sensory Theatre. Jill’s work as an installation artist affords her a deep understanding of the value of safe spaces for creativity, and her experience as a teacher means she understands the day-to-day challenges of the classroom. Continuing Professional Development for schools – training pilot
Jill is currently working with schools to develop a range of training and support that focuses on increasing engagement and connection (for both students and staff). The content will build upon Jill’s PhD research with people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, as well as disseminating insights from her work with sensory theatre practitioners and other artists. Jill’s aim is to develop a high-quality training through rigorous research and development. Watch this space for new CPD training packages for schools.

Using atmosphere to improve the quality of our connection in the classroom
We know that learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities require routine and repetition to support their understanding of the world around them. But high levels of routine and repetition can turn our classrooms into mundane spaces of functionality, leading to disengagement from staff. Sessions where a dramatic atmosphere is created can be a powerful way to elevate our shared experiences with pupils, heightening engagement for both staff and learners and providing new ways to connect without words. In this training, we tap into our own sensory memories and find simple ways to recreate and enact atmospheric moments, events or places that will form the basis of exciting classroom sessions. By focusing on the sensory, well-being (for all) is foregrounded, and we lay the foundations for meaningful shared experiences that can be further developed with learners in the classroom. Staff teams will learn some simple drama principles that will enable them to heighten the engagement levels in their classrooms, and by the end of the day they will have developed their own unique ritual, based around a chosen sensory moment, place or event, that can be embedded into their regular classroom routine.
This new training package is currently in development. Watch this space for updates, or Contact Jill to find out more.
