The Power of Dens
Den-building can come from a need to ‘escape from the strictures of the adult world to places of refuge and peace, places to dream’ (Dovey, 1990). Dens serve a double function as both a refuge and a release for the creative imagination. To build a den is to tap into an instinctive human drive to create personalised, intimate spaces where we feel safe. The feelings associated with den-building are powerful and it is a form of play that can bring delight and a great sense of accomplishment. There is an emotional charge to being inside the intimate, human-scale space of a den, and this can enliven and engage a child who may otherwise appear to be disengaged or distant. Dens can also be great places for playing with torch light and shadows. This experiential workshop invites participants to explore first-hand the value of safe, nurturing spaces and to consider the application of these ideas in their own setting. Den-building can also be offered as a fun drop-in activity for families. Contact me for more information.
